ARTISOFT(TM) NOW SHIPPING LANTASTIC« FOR NETWARE« NETWORK SOFTWARE
Adds Peer-to-Peer Features, Low-Cost Expansion and Backup for
Novell's NetWare -- Call 1-800-TINY-RAM For More Information
(TUCSON, Ariz. -- December 23, 1991) -- Artisoft, the leader
in peer-to-peer technology with its LANtastic« Local Area Network,
has begun shipping its LANtastic for NetWare software which
provides Novell« NetWare« users with the LANtastic network's
peer-to-peer features. It also allows Novell network users to
expand their network without purchasing an expensive NetWare
upgrade and acts as a valuable backup network that keeps operating
when the NetWare server is down or being serviced. The LANtastic
for NetWare software sells for $499 and supports up to 300 users.
Artisoft's LANtastic for NetWare network runs on top of
Novell's NetBIOS emulation and requires Novell's NetBIOS to
operate. It allows Novell NetWare network users to share their
local hardware and software resources with others on the network
while maintaining connection to the dedicated Novell server.
Individuals, corporate workgroups and even large departments will
be able to overlay NetWare's centralized structure and
administration to easily permit localized control of and access to
programs, data, printers, hard drives, CD-ROMs and other shared
resources.
The LANtastic for NetWare software also allows Novell users to
add PCs to the network beyond the limitations of their NetWare
version, eliminating the immediate need for an expensive NetWare
upgrade. Although the number of users accessing the NetWare server
at any one time would still be determined by the specific NetWare
version's limitations, users could be added to the LANtastic for
NetWare network simply by installing network adapters and cabling.
This gives Novell network users a cost-effective way to add network
users and upgrade to a larger-user version of NetWare if and when
they need to, and when they can afford it.
The LANtastic for NetWare network can also serve as a backup
when the NetWare server of network goes down or is being serviced.
Because it will not go down when the NetWare network is down, it
can function as a safety net, maintaining vital network-dependent
business and departmental operations as well as increasing employee
productivity through less down time.
"The LANtastic for NetWare software provides a low-cost,
easy-to-use solution for Novell users wanting the features,
peripheral-sharing and flexibility of a peer-to-peer network," said
Jack Schoof, Artisoft's President and CEO. "It also lets them
inexpensively expand their network and gives them a backup network
that keeps running when the Novell server or network goes down or
is being serviced."
The LANtastic for NetWare e-mail feature will even allow
NetWare users to add voice mail capabilities across the network by
adding Artisoft's Sounding BoardTM adapters to network PCs. The
Sounding Board adapter is a low-cost, IBM«-compatible expansion
adapter with a telephone-style handset that converts between
audio/voice signals and a digital data stream. When used with the
LANtastic network, it provides voice mail and voice chat
capabilities across the network. The Sounding Board adapters are
priced at $99 for ISA bus and $199 for Micro Channel.
Artisoft develops and manufactures a full line of hardware and
software for local area networks including the LANtastic Local Area
Network. The LANtastic network is the leading DOS-based
peer-to-peer network and has won numerous industry awards for its
cost-effective features, performance, and ease of use. It allows up
to 300 users of IBM«-compatible computers to connect and share
information and peripheral devices such as printers, hard drives
and CD-ROMs.
